The Talmud1 asks the same question, and answers that the source is the verse: "And it was evening and it was morning, one day."2 From there the Talmud infers that the day follows the night.

Genesis says that God created for six days and rested on the seventh. This is why we (Jews) rest on the seventh day.

sabbath I have been a sabbath keeper most of my life but in looking into the law I find only that it says to work seven days and rest and worship one day. Is this just an example of how we are to work? Since jewish people have had the law I want to know how saturday sabbath was established. Thank you. Reply

Jerome's comment about a "pagan calendar" Pagans worked on all days of the week. For thousands of years, Pagans considered Jews lazy because they did not work every day. The Christian sabbath is on Sunday because it was the day of the discovery that Jesus was no longer in his tomb.
